Recovery of Stopped-Out Students

At The Texas A&M University System, we are committed to helping students who have stopped out before completing their degrees return to higher education and reach their academic and career goals.

Through our partnership with ReUp Education, we work to identify, reengage, and support former students on their path back to college and through degree completion. ReUp combines data-informed outreach, personalized communication, and one-on-one coaching to reconnect students with their universities and help them navigate barriers to returning.

Building on successful implementation at several A&M System universities, the Board of Regents approved a five-year investment in 2025 to expand the initiative across the System. The investment provides $3.5 million annually to support this work, strengthening our collective capacity to reconnect with former students and help more Texans complete the degrees they started.

How It Works

  • Identify: Our universities work with ReUp to analyze enrollment data and identify students who have stopped out before completing their degrees.
  • Engage: ReUp’s trained success coaches use personalized, multichannel outreach to reconnect former students and explore opportunities to return.
  • Support: Coaches work one-on-one with students to understand and address financial, academic, personal, and other barriers that may prevent them from returning.
  • Reenroll: Students receive guidance throughout the reenrollment process and support as they transition back into coursework and continue toward degree completion.
  • Sustain: Universities receive ongoing data, insights, and reporting to strengthen strategies for reengaging students, supporting persistence, and increasing degree completion.

A Systemwide Commitment to Degree Completion

For Texans who have earned college credit but left higher education before completing a credential, returning to college can open new opportunities for career advancement and economic mobility. It also allows students to build on the time, effort, and resources they have already invested in their education.

By expanding this work across the A&M System, we are building on lessons learned from early implementation while strengthening our universities’ capacity to reconnect with former students and support them through completion. This coordinated approach also creates opportunities to share insights, identify effective practices, and improve how we serve returning students over time.

Through sustained investment and collaboration, our goal is not simply to bring students back to college, but to help them persist, complete their degrees, and achieve their academic and career goals.
